Buckeye Swim Club/Hilliker YMCA 2007-2008 General Information Welcome to a new year at Buckeye Swim Club! If you are new to Buckeye, you will find that we have the most professional coaching staff in Central Ohio, offering innovative and quality swim instruction in a fun and motivational environment. We are a close knit team with strong friendships between swimmers and parents alike. Buckeye loves to welcome new families into our program! Below you will find a summary of our programs. If there is anything that we have left out, or that you need clarified, please don’t hesitate to e-mail or call Coach Laurie Karr ( laurie@buckeyeswimclub.com or 614-562-0544). COLUMBUS PRACTICE LOCATIONS: Information you need to know for 2007-2008: OSU Program Buckeye Swim Club is participating in the swim training camps offered by the OSU Men’s Swimming program. This program is supervised by the OSU men’s team, but all coaching and other administration is run via Buckeye Swim Club. Meet Leagues: YMCA and USA Swimming All of our Columbus swimmers are member so USA swimming (USA-S) & YMCA. Membership in USA-S, allows our swimmers the opportunity to compete in local, regional and national meets. USA-S membership also gives our swimmers an extra insurance protection at team functions, practices and meets. We are also members of the Southwest League, one of the foremost YMCA leagues in the country. With teams from Cincinnati and Dayton that regularly finish in the top 10 at YMCA Nationals, our program offers a great opportunity for our YMCA members. By becoming a junior member at the Hilliker YMCA in Bellefontaine your swimmer can represent Buckeye at YMCA meets as well as USA swimming meets. Attendance & Meets We do not require attendance at practice. Our fees are based on our average attendance which is 2-3 days a week. However, you will get out of our club what you put in – the more you attend the more you will improve. All meets are optional however, our focus at practices includes meet preparation and competition, thus participation is strongly encouraged. Registration Fee Each Columbus swimmer is charged an annual $115 registration fee. This goes directly to pay each swimmers membership in the following organizations: USA Swimming ($55, membership expires 12/31/08), Hilliker YMCA ($55, membership expires 3/31/08) and COSA ($3). Fundraising This year we will participate in one to two large fundraisers. These fundraisers are intended to keep the overall annual cost of swimming at a reasonable level for all of our participants. As you can imagine the cost of 3 coaches, travel to meets, pool rental, coaches’ education and training and swim equipment makes for a large budget! As always – fundraising at Buckeye is as active as you want it to be – if you do not have time simply speak with Laurie Karr about alternatives. Post Fall Sport Participation In order to secure your place on Buckeye, you should sign up for participation beginning Spet. 24. However, we anticipate that we will have a handful of spaces available for those that want to begin swimming after fall sports conclude. If we do have spots open at the end of fall sports, we will fill those at a prorated rate.
Gray is our group for older swimmers (ages 9-12) that are new to competitive swimming. Swimmers should be comfortable in the water, but do not need prior knowledge of the competitive strokes Scarlet 1 is our group for 9-10 year old swimmers. Swimmers will continue to improve their stroke mechanics, learning to control strokes through growth spurts. Swimmers will also improve their conditioning levels and begin to learn the basics of training. Scarlet 2 is our group for 11-12 year old swimmers. Swimmers will fine tune stroke mechanics and will participate in training sets. Conditioning begins to be stressed as much as stroke mechanics. Senior is our group for 13 & older swimmers. Swimmers will improve their conditioning through participation in more intense training. Stroke mechanics will continue to be fine tuned based on individual needs. Swimmers may alsoparticipate in dryland core body conditioning, longer water sessions and college preparatory training. Why Buckeye Swimming?· NO REQUIRED FUNDRAISING.. Parents are not required to give their time, work meets or sell anything. · Professional & Caring Coaching Staff. There are a lot of club teams with a professional staff. And a lot with a caring staff. But very rarely do you find a club with professional AND caring coaches. Our coaches put the swimmers and their FAMILIES first. · Long Term Development of swimmers. Many local groups push the stheltes for quick results and neglect the import building blocks needed for long term success. Buckeye wants every swimmer to love the sport and continue to improve through growth spurts and challenges. Thus, we give each simmer the needed tools to achieve long term success. · SCRIP for fees. Athletics can be an uneeded strain on the family budget. Not only do we strive to keep our fees manageable; we allow families to purchase SCRIP to reduce their fees. Local businesses give a percent back from cash gift certificate purchases. For example—$300 a month at Kroger= $15 off your swimming fees. · Flexible practice schedule. Most water sessions are scheduled in the same 2 hour block. This means that siblings can get in and out of the pool in 2 hours or less. No more hauling your kids all over town to get to fit in their schedule! Also, we do not require practice — come when you can! · FUN Swim meets & social activities. For the kids it’s not all about the instruction. So we take care to provide the kids with fun social events & different meets to help improve team bonding and grow their love of swimming.
The Coaching Staff at Buckeye is matched by no other staff in Columbus. They are professional and caring; constantly striving to help each individual succeed. The Buckeye Team works together to help each swimmer take pride and achieve success in his/her swimming. We are a USA Swimming Member Club.
